When is the PS6 coming out?

There is no official PlayStation 6 release date. In its May 2026 earnings Q&A, Sony said it had not decided when to launch next-generation platforms or how to price them. That statement concerns next-generation platforms generally; it is not a dated announcement for a product named PS6.

Reports and predictions have suggested different years, but none is a Sony commitment. A projected date can change before an announcement, and Sony could choose a different name or launch plan entirely. If a retailer claims to know the exact day, look for an accompanying announcement from PlayStation before treating it as fact.

Is the PS6 release date window 2027 or 2028?

Neither 2027 nor 2028 is an officially confirmed PS6 release window. Those years appear in industry speculation, but an estimate is not the same thing as a launch plan. Sony's most useful public statement on timing remains its May 2026 Q&A, which said no decision had been made at that point.

There is a separate date that can cause confusion: PlayStation says production of physical discs for new games will end in January 2028. That is a policy for new releases, not an announcement that a PS6 will launch in 2028. It also does not establish whether a future console will read existing discs.

Has Sony confirmed the PlayStation 6?

Sony has publicly discussed investing in its next-generation platform and related content. In its Game & Network Services investor Q&A, the company discussed investment in the next generation alongside the current PS5 business. That makes future platform development a real part of Sony's plans, but it does not confirm the retail name, design, launch lineup, or a specific release date.

We use PS6 and PlayStation 6 as convenient names for the expected successor. Sony has not yet presented a finished console under either name.

PS6 price: how much will it cost?

Sony has not announced a PS6 price. Its May Q&A noted that memory costs affect console manufacturing and that timing and pricing for next-generation platforms had not been decided. An exact price attached to a leak or concept image is not a confirmed retail price.

Until Sony announces hardware and pricing, even a comparison with the PS5's launch price is only historical context. Component costs, storage, features, and Sony's business strategy could all change the final figure.

PS6 specs, games, and backward compatibility

Sony has not published a PS6 specification sheet, launch games list, or compatibility policy. That includes its processor, storage, resolution, frame rates, controller, and whether PS5 games and accessories will work. Do not assume that a list of alleged specs or a preorder page reflects a final product.

There is genuine technology news to follow: Sony and AMD have described a graphics collaboration called Project Amethyst. Sony's October 2026 QSSR announcement says the AI upscaling technology for PS5 grew out of that work. It is evidence of ongoing graphics research, not a PS6 feature list.

Will there be a PS6 handheld?

Sony has not announced a PS6 handheld, its price, or a release date. Reports have described a possible portable PlayStation, but a reported project is not a confirmed product and should not be confused with the existing PlayStation Portal. Our PS6 handheld guide explains the reports, native play versus streaming, and what remains unknown.

Should you buy a PS5 or wait for PS6?

Buy a PS5 if there are games you want to play now and the current console meets your budget. Its library and features are available to evaluate today. Start with our upcoming PS5 games guide and our Resident Evil Requiem review for examples of what the platform offers.

Waiting is reasonable if your current console still serves you well and you are comfortable with an unknown release date and price. There is no confirmed PS6 window to build a purchase around, so a rumor alone is a poor reason to delay a purchase you otherwise need.
