Insurgency: Sandstorm has no story campaign
Insurgency: Sandstorm does not have a single-player story campaign. It offers tactical multiplayer matches, online co-op against AI, and a Local Play option for solo matches with bots. Local Play lets you experience its combat alone, but it does not add a sequence of story missions or a campaign to finish.
If you are buying it specifically for a military story campaign, that distinction matters. The publisher's Steam listing presents Sandstorm around tactical combat, online PvP and online co-op.
Campaign, Local Play and co-op compared
| What you want | What Sandstorm offers | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A story with connected missions | No story campaign | There is no campaign completion time or narrative mission list |
| Solo combat against AI | Local Play | Bot matches built around objectives |
| Teamwork against AI enemies | Online co-op | Other players share the fight against bots |
| Combat against human opponents | Online PvP | Competitive objective-based matches |
The practical question is whether you want a story or simply want to play without fighting other people. Sandstorm can suit the second preference through its AI modes.
Can you play Insurgency: Sandstorm alone?
Yes. Local Play is the solo option to look for if you want to fight AI instead of entering a multiplayer queue. Saber's Operation: Breachpoint release notes document fixes for bots and Checkpoint objectives in Local Play, confirming that this remains part of the game.
Treat those matches as a way to learn the combat and objectives. A bot match can give you room to get comfortable before joining other players. It will not supply the storytelling, scripted scenes or chapter progression you might expect from a conventional campaign.
Does Local Play count toward Challenges?
Saber's Challenge-system announcement specifies that Challenges count in official online matches. Local Play and community servers do not contribute to that system. Do not assume a solo bot session will advance the same rewards as an official online match.
Does Sandstorm have a co-op campaign?
It has online co-op against AI, but that is different from a story campaign you complete with friends.
Checkpoint is the mode highlighted in our Insurgency: Sandstorm review. In that review, I enjoyed the tension of moving through capture and destruction objectives with other players, checking corners and trying to keep the team alive. That is the appeal of Sandstorm's co-op: the fight itself creates the memorable moments.
For a session with friends, Saber's party instructions explain how to form a group from the main menu. Its crossplay FAQ covers parties across PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Joining friends does not turn the co-op modes into a narrative campaign.
Is the campaign different on PS5, Xbox or PC?
There is no separate story campaign to choose on those platforms. Saber's official FAQ describes the console and PC versions as offering the same game content, with PC modded content being a potential source of differences.
If a video shows unfamiliar maps or scenarios, check whether it uses mods before expecting the same content in your console copy. Saber also says console mod support is not currently planned.
Our original review covers the PS4 version played on PS5 through backward compatibility. Its performance impressions belong to that version; use this guide for the campaign and mode distinction rather than treating the older review as a fresh test of every current release.
Should you buy it for solo play?
I would choose Sandstorm for its tense tactical combat and the co-op experience described in our review. If a scripted single-player campaign is the reason you are shopping, I would look elsewhere. Local Play offers a different kind of solo experience, and it is worth deciding whether that is what you actually want before buying.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Insurgency: Sandstorm campaign?
There is no story campaign to complete. Time spent in bot matches or multiplayer should not be presented as a campaign length.
Is Checkpoint a campaign?
Checkpoint provides capture and destruction objectives within a match. Our review discusses that mode in detail, but it is not a connected story campaign.
Can I play solo without joining a public co-op match?
Look for Local Play for solo bot matches. Online co-op is the option for playing against AI alongside other players.
