How to Set Up Meta Quest 3S

From unboxing to your first game: pair the headset, get a clear fit, set a play boundary and solve the most common setup problems.

Updated October 30, 2026 · Menu names and setup order can change with Meta updates.

What you need to set up Meta Quest 3S

Charge the headset, install the Meta Horizon app on a compatible phone, sign in to your Meta account and follow the headset and app prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and pair. Then adjust the fit, set a boundary and download a first game. You do not need a PC for standalone VR.

  • Meta Quest 3S, both Touch Plus controllers, their AA batteries and a charging cable.
  • A compatible iPhone or Android phone with the Meta Horizon app and Bluetooth enabled.
  • A Meta account, Wi-Fi details and a clear indoor play space.
  • Optional: glasses spacer if needed, and your Wi-Fi password ready on your phone.

For a child or teen, follow Meta's current age-appropriate account and parent supervision prompts. Setup screens may appear in a different order after software updates.

1. Charge the headset and wake the controllers

  1. Remove the headset, controllers, charging cable and any protective packaging. Keep the lenses out of direct sunlight.
  2. Connect the headset to a suitable USB-C charger and give it enough charge to complete updates. Use the supplied charger where available.
  3. Remove the controller battery pull tabs if present. Each Touch Plus controller uses one AA battery; secure the wrist straps.
  4. Hold the headset power button until it starts. Put it on and follow the language and initial prompts.

2. Connect to Wi-Fi and pair the Meta Horizon app

  1. Install or update the Meta Horizon mobile app on your phone. Sign in with the Meta account that should own your purchases.
  2. Enable Bluetooth and grant the app the device-discovery permissions it requests for pairing. Keep your phone near the powered-on headset.
  3. Follow the headset prompts to connect to Wi-Fi. In the app, choose the option to add or pair a headset and select Meta Quest 3S.
  4. If prompted, enter the pairing code shown inside the headset. Follow the remaining prompts on both devices; their order can vary.
  5. Allow system updates to finish, keeping the headset charged and connected. The headset may restart.

If pairing fails, confirm both devices use the intended account, Bluetooth is enabled, the app is up to date and the headset is awake. Restart the phone and headset before trying again. Our setup and reset assistant offers a guided checklist.

3. Adjust the strap, lenses and glasses spacer

Loosen the straps, place the headset over your eyes and pull the rear strap around the back of your head. Adjust the side and top straps until the headset is secure without overtightening. Move the headset slightly up or down to find the clearest view.

Meta Quest 3S has three lens-spacing positions. Gently move the lenses between positions and pick the one that makes text most comfortable and clear. Its Fresnel lenses have a smaller clear center, so headset placement matters. If you wear glasses, install the included spacer following the headset instructions and check that your glasses do not touch the lenses.

Still uncomfortable? Try the VR comfort fix wizard. Clean lenses with a dry optical microfiber cloth; avoid liquid or abrasive cleaners.

4. Create a safe play area

  1. Clear furniture, pets, people and fragile objects from the area. Allow extra room around your reach, not just where your feet stand.
  2. Use a well-lit room so the headset can track your surroundings. Avoid direct sunlight on the lenses.
  3. Follow the in-headset prompts to confirm floor level and choose a stationary or room-scale boundary suitable for your space. Review the suggested boundary and adjust it around obstacles.
  4. Wear the controller straps and check the real room again before moving. Recreate the boundary if the furniture or play location changes.

A boundary is an aid, not a physical barrier. Use the VR play space planner if you want to map the room before playing.

5. Install your first game and learn the controls

Complete the on-screen controller tutorial, then open the Meta Horizon Store in the headset or mobile app. Choose an app compatible with Meta Quest 3S, review its age rating and comfort information, and install it. Start with a free, stationary or teleport-based experience and take short breaks while you get used to VR.

Meta Quest 3S setup troubleshooting

The headset will not pair

Check the correct Meta account, Bluetooth, app permissions and that the headset is awake nearby. Update the app and restart both devices. If a pairing code is shown, enter it as prompted. Avoid factory resetting as a first step.

Wi-Fi or an update is stuck

Check the password and whether another device can use the network. Move closer to the router, restart the headset and retry. Keep the headset charged while an update is running; consult Meta's software update guidance if the problem continues.

A controller is missing or not tracking

Check its battery tab or replace the AA battery, then make sure the room is well lit and cameras are unobstructed. Restart the headset; use the Horizon app's device and controller settings to pair again if needed.

The picture is blurry or the boundary is wrong

Reposition the headset, try each lens-spacing setting and gently clean the lenses. For a misplaced boundary, clear the room and follow the environment or boundary settings to set it again. If problems continue, consult Meta Quest support.

A factory reset erases local data. Back up recordings and check supported cloud saves first; the reset assistant explains the warning and steps.

Meta Quest 3S setup FAQs

Do you need a PC to set up Meta Quest 3S?

No. Meta Quest 3S is a standalone headset. You need a compatible phone for the Meta Horizon app, a Meta account and Wi-Fi for the normal setup flow. A gaming PC is optional for PC VR.

How do I pair Meta Quest 3S with my phone?

Install the Meta Horizon app, sign in to the Meta account you want to use, turn on Bluetooth and follow the app's headset pairing prompts. Keep the headset powered on and enter the code shown in the headset if prompted.

Can I set up a Meta Quest 3S for a child?

Use Meta's age-appropriate account and supervision flow. A parent or guardian may need to create and manage the account; follow the current age and consent prompts rather than entering an inaccurate birth date.

Why is my Meta Quest 3S blurry?

Adjust the strap and position the headset higher or lower until text is clear, then try the three lens-spacing positions. Clean the lenses gently with a dry optical microfiber cloth. Stop if the headset causes discomfort.
