The Albania VPN trick can make YouTube ad-free without Premium

Quick answer: connect your VPN to a server in Albania before opening YouTube. Albania is not currently listed as a YouTube monetized market, so standard pre-roll and mid-roll ads usually do not load when YouTube sees an Albanian IP address. This gives you ad-free viewing, but it does not unlock the other features included with YouTube Premium.

We use this trick ourselves with Surfshark: open the app, search for Albania, connect, and then launch YouTube. It works in the regular YouTube app as well as in a browser, although you may need to fully close and reopen YouTube if it was already running.

We were using and paying for Surfshark long before Duuro became a Surfshark affiliate; the partnership came after our own experience with the service.

Information checked September 1, 2026: Surfshark currently lists Albania among its VPN server locations, and Albania remains absent from Google's official list of YouTube monetized markets. YouTube can change how and where it serves ads, so treat this as a useful current workaround rather than a permanent guarantee.

How to watch YouTube without ads using Surfshark

  1. Fully close the YouTube app or browser tab.
  2. Open Surfshark on your phone, computer, TV, or other supported device.
  3. Search for Albania in the Surfshark locations list.
  4. Connect to the Albanian server and wait for Surfshark to confirm the connection.
  5. Open YouTube and start a video.

That is the entire trick. You do not need to create a new YouTube account, change the country saved in your Google profile, install a modified YouTube app, or buy a YouTube Premium subscription.

If YouTube was open before the VPN connected, the app may continue using location or ad-session data it already loaded. Closing it first gives the method the best chance of working immediately.

Why does connecting to Albania remove YouTube ads?

YouTube advertising is not active in every country. Google says advertisers can target YouTube ads only in countries where YouTube has launched a monetized site, and Albania is not on its current list of monetized markets.

When you connect to Surfshark's Albanian server, websites see the server's Albanian IP address instead of your normal public IP address. YouTube therefore treats the connection as coming from Albania, where its standard advertising inventory is generally unavailable.

This is not Surfshark's CleanWeb feature removing YouTube video ads. The important part is the Albanian location. Surfshark simply gives your device an Albanian IP address before you open YouTube.

There is independent evidence beyond our own use, too. In January 2026, TechRadar tested the Albania VPN method and reported seeing no ads during two and a half hours of viewing. Results can still vary by device, account, video, IP address, and changes made by Google.

Is this free YouTube Premium?

No. Calling it "free YouTube Premium" makes the trick sound more powerful than it is. What you get is regular YouTube with standard YouTube-served ads usually removed while the VPN is connected.

FeatureAlbania VPN trickYouTube Premium
Removes standard pre-roll and mid-roll adsUsually, while connectedYes
Offline video downloadsNoYes
Background playback on mobileNoYes
YouTube Music PremiumNoYes
Premium account benefits on every connectionNoYes
Removes creator-recorded sponsorshipsNoNo

YouTube Premium includes offline downloads, background playback, and YouTube Music benefits. An Albanian VPN connection does not turn those account features on.

The trick also cannot remove a sponsorship read that a creator recorded as part of the video. That segment is part of the video file, not an ad delivered separately by YouTube.

Is watching YouTube this way actually free?

If you already pay for Surfshark, there is no additional charge to use its Albania location, so the YouTube part is effectively free. If you do not already have a VPN, then this is not a completely free method because a Surfshark subscription costs money.

We still prefer that honest description over promising "free Premium." A single Surfshark subscription can be useful for privacy and other VPN tasks as well, but you should compare its current price with the price and features of YouTube Premium before subscribing solely for this trick.

You should also know that ad-free viewing through an Albanian IP does not create YouTube Premium revenue for the channels you watch. If you want to support a favorite creator, consider a membership, merchandise, Patreon, or another direct option they provide.

What to try if YouTube still shows ads

This method normally works quickly, but cached sessions and changes to YouTube's ad system can get in the way. Try these steps in order:

  1. Confirm Surfshark says you are connected to Albania.
  2. Force-close YouTube, then reopen it after the VPN connection is active.
  3. On a computer, try YouTube in a private or incognito browser window.
  4. Disconnect and reconnect to refresh the VPN connection.
  5. Restart the device if the YouTube app keeps reusing an old session.

If ads still appear after that, the workaround may be unreliable for your device or current Surfshark IP address. Some viewers occasionally report ads even when connected to Albania, and YouTube could close the gap entirely in the future.

Does the Albania YouTube trick work on phones and TVs?

It can work on any device whose YouTube traffic is routed through an Albanian VPN server. The easiest setup is a device that can run Surfshark and YouTube directly: connect to Albania in Surfshark, then open YouTube.

For a TV or streaming box that cannot run a VPN app, the more advanced option is routing that device through a VPN-enabled router. Router setup varies significantly by model, so check Surfshark's current instructions for your hardware before changing network settings.

Remember that the VPN must stay connected while you watch. If it disconnects and your normal IP address returns, YouTube may begin serving ads again.

Do not use this to buy a cheaper Premium plan

This guide is about watching the free version of YouTube through an Albanian connection. It is not a guide to buying a YouTube Premium subscription from another country.

YouTube's Premium travel and location policy says that misrepresenting your location with a VPN when signing up for or using a paid plan can lead to subscription cancellation. There is no need to enter payment details, change your billing country, or purchase anything from YouTube for the ad-free Albania method described here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get YouTube Premium for free with a VPN?
No. Connecting to Albania can remove standard YouTube ads, but it does not activate a Premium membership or unlock Premium-only features such as downloads, background playback, and YouTube Music Premium.

Which VPN country has no YouTube ads?
Albania is the country we use. It is not currently included in Google's official list of YouTube monetized markets, and Surfshark currently offers an Albanian server location.

Does Surfshark block YouTube ads?
Connecting Surfshark to Albania usually prevents standard YouTube ads from being served because of the apparent location of your connection. This is different from a normal ad blocker filtering the ads.

Will the Albania VPN trick always work?
No workaround like this is permanent. YouTube may change its monetized markets, location checks, ad delivery, or treatment of VPN addresses. If Albania is added as a monetized market, ads could begin appearing normally.

Do I need a new YouTube account?
No. Connect to Albania before opening YouTube and use your existing account, or watch while signed out.

Does this remove sponsored segments inside videos?
No. Creator sponsorships are recorded into the video itself, so changing your VPN location cannot remove them.

The bottom line

If your only goal is to watch YouTube without standard ads, connecting Surfshark to Albania is one of the simplest methods available right now. It takes a few seconds, works with the normal YouTube experience, and requires no modified app.

Just keep the promise realistic: this is ad-free YouTube through an Albanian VPN connection, not free YouTube Premium. If that is all you need, connect through Surfshark's Albania location, reopen YouTube, and enjoy the quieter viewing experience.
