Drone Simulator VR Review - Meta Quest 3

Drone Simulator VR succeeds in delivering an engaging and authentic-feeling drone piloting experience

Drone Simulator VR offers an intriguingly accurate simulation of drone piloting in virtual reality. As someone diving into the world of drone flying for the first time, this simulator provides an immersive and educational experience, despite its relatively modest content offering.

The game shines brightest in its control implementation, offering three distinct control schemes that cater to different playstyles. The most intuitive scheme leverages the Quest 3's controllers masterfully, with the sticks, triggers, and grab buttons providing precise control over both the drone and its camera systems. You operate from a stationary position using your Meta Avatar, which is really cool, with a virtual tablet displaying the drone's perspective mounted on your right hand – a thoughtful design choice that adds to the simulation's authenticity.

The flight mechanics implement three modes: Tripod, Position, and Sport, each offering different handling characteristics. The physics engine delivers convincing drone behavior, making every movement feel weighty and consequential. Collisions with any object – be it walls, trees, or lamp posts – result in your drone's destruction, adding a layer of tension to your flying sessions. But that's not really an issue as a new drone respawns after a few seconds.

Drone Simulator VR also features a first-person view (FPV) mode that transforms the experience entirely. While initially challenging due to potential motion sickness when executing sharp turns, adaptation comes quickly. Once acclimated, FPV mode delivers an exhilarating perspective as you thread your drone through buildings, industrial catwalks, and tight spaces. The sense of speed and control in this mode is particularly impressive.

The game features three expansive environments to explore, each offering distinct architectural and navigational challenges. The maps are thoughtfully designed with various points of interest, including:

  • Collectible coins placed in strategically challenging locations
  • Photo opportunities featuring positioned mannequins
  • Four time trial courses of varying difficulty

The photography elements add an extra layer of gameplay, with adjustable zoom and gimbal settings allowing for creative shot composition. The time trials serve as excellent skill tests, pushing players to master the drone's handling characteristics while racing through checkpoints.

These environments are well-detailed enough to make navigation challenging and interesting, while maintaining the performance necessary for smooth VR gameplay. And I truly hope they add more environments in the future as the game's primary limitation is its content scope. I did experience the bulk of what's available within approximately 45 minutes. Oh and I almost forgot, the music absolutely slaps.

However, the quality of that content is high, and the $10 price point feels reasonable for the experience offered. The replay value comes from perfecting your flying skills and improving time trial performances scoring better times in the leaderboards.

Drone Simulator VR succeeds in delivering an engaging and authentic-feeling drone piloting experience. While the content quantity might leave some wanting more, the quality of the simulation and the implementation of VR controls make it a worthwhile investment for those interested in drone flight. The addition of FPV mode adds significant value, offering a thrilling perspective that drone enthusiasts will particularly appreciate.

The game serves both as an entertaining VR experience and potentially valuable training tool for aspiring drone pilots. At its modest price point, it offers good value despite its brevity, particularly for those interested in learning about drone operation or seeking a unique VR flying experience. The robust physics engine, thoughtful control schemes, and well-designed environments create a compelling package that's easy to recommend to anyone interested in drone flight or virtual reality simulation experiences. I highly recommend it. Thanks for reading!

The game was reviewed on a Quest 3 via a promo copy provided by the developer. Drone Simulator VR is available on Meta Quest and PCVR.
