The Enigma Machine offers just enough intrigue, mysteries, and strange sights in its brief 40 minutes runtime to leave an impression, making it worth considering for fans of the peculiar

Diving into The Enigma Machine feels like stepping into a strange dreamscape filled with mysteries. This curious title pulls you in with its compelling story and unique old-school visual style, even if some of its gameplay elements can be imperfect.

The plot thrusts you into an interactive 3D world that serves as the mind of an artificial intelligence, though communicating with your digital guide through its tiny text interface is far from ideal. Still, the intrigue had me pushing forward to unravel the unfolding technological conundrums.

Once into the first person puzzles, you'll search various unsettling environments for codes while taking in their unnerving ambiance bolstered by a moody soundtrack. Environments like an eerie art gallery or unsettling house left me on edge. While controls aren't as tight as they could be, moving about had a surreal feel that kept me hooked.

Visually, the rough retro stylings are an experience unto themselves, evoking a strange blend of the unpolished yet uncanny. It basically looks like a PlayStation 1 game, vertex jitter included. Lighting is often dark to a fault, and squinting became necessary. Also, the text during the first person sections is so incredibly small, it's basically illegible. Still, there's a certain charm to this unvarnished take on 32-bit era visuals that retro fans may appreciate.

Its marriage of mechanics and storytelling isn't perfect, with some sections breaking up the pacing. However, The Enigma Machine offers just enough intrigue, mysteries, and strange sights in its brief 40 minutes runtime to leave an impression, making it worth considering for fans of the peculiar. While rough around the edges, this puzzling trip into a digital mind stays compelling. I don't know how much this game costs, but if it's a few bucks and old retro PS1 graphics have a place in your heart, give this a chance. Thanks for reading!

The game was reviewed on a Series X via a promo code provided by the developer. The Enigma Machine is available on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch.
