Hotel R'n'R Rockstar Simulator Review

Hotel R'n'R is a fun VR game that lets you live out those legendary rock star stories of hotel demolition

Hotel R'n'R puts you in the shoes of a struggling rock star who makes a deal with the devil to achieve fame through calculated chaos. The premise is delightfully absurd - destroy hotel rooms to climb the ladder of rock stardom. If you've ever wanted to live out your Mötley Crüe fantasies of trashing luxury suites, this is your chance to embrace your inner Nikki Sixx.

The game's structure is straightforward but engaging. You start in modest hotel rooms with basic tools and a time limit to cause maximum destruction. As you progress, you unlock larger, more luxurious venues with increasingly valuable items to wreck. The monetary and infamy rewards from your demolition sprees fund new equipment and unlock additional locations.

The arsenal at your disposal is impressive too. Sure, you can use your bare hands to punch everything, but why do that and risk dying when you can use things like TVs to smash onto other things. Alternatively, you can use your hard earned cash to purchase from simple things like baseball bats to a full suite of destructive tools. Nail guns let you pick off delicate objects from afar, while Molotov cocktails and C4 create spectacular chain reactions. The game also features an interesting "power-up" system through pills that grant abilities like telekinesis and super strength, adding variety to your destructive capabilities.

The physics-based gameplay means each room becomes a playground of possibilities. Chandeliers crash spectacularly when their supports are damaged, furniture splinters realistically upon impact, and chain reactions can be triggered by carefully planned demolition. The five-minute time limit per room creates a sense of urgency, forcing you to think strategically about which items to target for maximum damage. And if the cleaning lady tries to interrupt your rampage? A quick punch will send her packing, buying you precious extra seconds to continue your destruction spree.

Beyond the main hotel destruction, the game offers entertaining side activities. The standout for me is a timed challenge to destroy the Pope's car, which perfectly encapsulates the game's irreverent humor. These minigames provide a welcome break from the main gameplay loop and add value to the package. Then once you've unlocked every hotel room, you can replay them in Sandbox mode where there's no time limit so you can take your time to destroy everything.

The progression system keeps things interesting by gradually introducing new tools and increasingly complex environments. Each new room presents fresh challenges and opportunities, whether it's dealing with security personnel or finding creative ways to maximize damage with your expanded arsenal.

The presentation captures the excessive spirit of 80s rock. The devil's deal setup is played for laughs, and the environments range from dingy motels to opulent suites. The audio design, particularly the sound of destruction, adds satisfying feedback to every crash and bang.

However, the core interaction system needs refinement. Grabbing and manipulating objects doesn't feel as precise or natural as it should, which can frustrate when trying to execute specific destructive maneuvers. This inconsistency in object handling occasionally breaks the immersion and can make some actions more challenging than intended.

Despite its control issues, Hotel R'n'R succeeds in delivering an entertaining destruction sandbox that captures the excess and rebellion of rock star hotel trashing. It's not trying to be a serious simulation - it's a playground for unleashing chaos in increasingly creative ways. While the novelty might wear thin for some players, those who embrace its anarchic spirit will find plenty to enjoy.

The game shines brightest when you're fully immersed in its destructive rhythm - chaining together combinations of tools and abilities to create spectacular scenes of chaos while racing against the clock. It's these moments that make you feel like you're living out those legendary rock star stories of hotel demolition. And yeah, while it may not have the polish of bigger VR titles, it compensates with pure, unadulterated fun. Thanks for reading!

The game was previewed on a Quest 3 via a promo copy provided by the develper. Hotel R'n'R Rockstar Simulator is available on Meta Quest, PCVR and PSVR2.
