Blizzard’s popular game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, which is available on the IOS and Android stores as well as PC, has recently unveiled and released its latest expansion, Hearthstone: Knights of the Frozen Throne, just four months after its previous expansion, Journey to Un’Goro. This expansion is themed on “Northrend”, the World of Warcraft’s frozen northern continent which is presided over by one of the game’s most iconic villains, The Lich King.
Blizzard has introduced 135 new cards to the game, new mechanics such as Lifesteal, the game’s first alternate win condition, Death Knight class cards and a free eight boss solo mission, of which seven of the bosses are currently available with the Lich King himself opening to challengers next week. Players will receive one free Death Knight Legendary Class Card from the prologue of the solo missions, but the rest of their cards will have to be purchased with the in-game currency, gold or real money in packs through Hearthstone’s in-game store.
Unlike many other games – including casino games – where odds can be searched and compared for the greatest gains, Blizzard has not released the odds for receiving cards in-game where possible. Responding to players who say they struggle to acquire legendaries in packs, Blizzard has stated that every player should receive one legendary card within their first ten packs in addition to their free Death Knight card.
Many have said the meta game of Hearthstone’s previous expansion did not change drastically with quest cards not having a great impact. By comparison, the new Death Knight cards have proved to be considerably stronger and are more versatile, as they do not force a deck to undergo a specific strategy. The meta game already appears to be picking up with the emergence of many old and new decks alike, such as Jade Druid, Dragon Priest, Evolution Shaman or Blood Warrior.
Three years after its original release, Hearthstone still appears to be growing at an incredible rate, as Blizzard announced last March that the game had reached over 70 million active players. This latest expansion offers the perfect opportunity to re-enter the game while most players, casuals and pros alike, are still learning how all the new cards work. Many of the new cards look great and as the meta has pushed many older cards out of standard play, the dust you will be awarded will allow you to craft a good mid-budget deck which you can use to hit the ground running.
