As of Monday 10th August, Funko Pop and Sony recently dropped one heck of a bombshell of news, however, don’t get your hopes up. This may be good news or bad news depending on where you live. As for us living outside America, as if things can’t get any worse. If you don’t know what I mean, I suggest you read on.
This news popped out of nowhere when I was scrolling through my news feed on Twitter when all of a sudden Insomniac Games dropped one hell of a bombshell of a piece of recent news. Oh, if only. I only recognized Ratchet, Clank, and Sweet Tooth out of the newly-revealed Funko Pops. While the other two, Sam Porter Bridges from Death Stranding and Joel from The Last Of Us, I can care less for, considering I find it hard to remember their names and it’s pretty clear I’m not interested in the games, to begin with. I may know Sweet Tooth despite I never played any of the Twisted Metal games nor do I have any interest in doing so but this doesn’t mean I’m interested in the Twisted Metal franchise or the Funko Pop figure for that matter. Unfortunately, there is a catch: they’re only exclusive to Gamestop. My excitement and hype were immediately dashed when I realized the Ratchet & Clank Funko Pop figures are only exclusive to Gamestop. So of course, I will go off on a tangent. This means that if you live outside of the US, you simply can’t buy them.
This isn’t fair to the Ratchet & Clank and PlayStation fans outside of the US that are dying to purchase them. There is more to the world that just frickin’ US (although, I can say the same about MCM Comic Con when it comes to not putting in the effort in their other MCM Comic Con conventions outside of London for handling celebrity guest requests and announcements. UK locations such as Manchester usually gets the short end of the stick). America (the same can be said about London and Japan too) can’t always get everything and they can’t always get what they want, y’know. This is something I can’t stress enough. If there is something I’m displeased about I won’t hold back on dishing out a brutally honest criticism if need be. As the saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for”, because sometimes your wishes don’t turn out to be the way you want them to be. Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Yooka-Laylee are the worst offenders.
So unless you have an American friend who is willing to buy one and send it to you or if an American YouTuber/influencer suddenly decided to launch a giveaway in the future, there is absolutely no way for anyone outside of America to purchase the upcoming PlayStation Funko Pop figures. Unless if there is any news in the future, if there is any hope the PlayStation Funko Pop figures will be released overseas, non-US residents are flat out of luck. Also, this doesn’t make any sense and it’s anti-consumer for the Funko Pop company and Sony to exclude the rest of the world as if they discarded their overseas fans like yesterday’s trash. What are we? Chopped liver?! After all, isn’t PlayStation a Japanese company? So, why the hell is Sony and Funko Pop are excluding the rest of the world, including Japan?
Funko and PlayStation collaborate to present another line inspired by PlayStation characters. Pre-Order Ratchet & Clank 2-pack, Sam Porter Bridges from DEATH STRANDING, Joel from The Last of Us, and Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal today!
Please excuse my rant, I needed to get this off my chest and I wanted to preach and express my inner feelings, even if I’m frustrated at the moment at the time of writing. Anyway on to my first impressions in regards to the new Funko Pop that recently dropped, all of the PlayStation Funko Pop figures look weird but that’s most likely because Shantae is the first and only Funko Pop figure I bought so far. At the moment, she’s very lonely. I was hoping she wouldn’t be lonely anymore considering the cat is finally out of the bag (or should I say space cat and robot?) but sadly, this isn’t the case. My hopes were completely dashed the instant they appeared. At first, my prayers were finally answered after all these years of constantly waiting, but then Sony and Funko Pop instantly dropped the ball. It’s an utterly missed opportunity for them to not consider to sell the PlayStation Funko Pop figures to their fans overseas, especially here in the UK. I don’t know what the hell they were thinking.
I’m still furious the Gamestop link doesn’t work for non-US citizens. I don’t understand why would the Gamestop website deny non-American citizens access to their store. There is one word to describe Funko Pop, Sony, and Gamestop’s disrespectful behavior: anti-consumer. Either the link doesn’t work (I refuse to believe the server is broken) or Gamestop refuses to let non-American residents gain access to the website.
There is only so much I can say about products. I reckon Ratchet should have bigger eyes, his eyes are too small for his face and they should’ve been green. As for Clank, his square-shaped face will take some time to get used to. I’m still used to seeing him with a spherical face instead of a square one.
In my opinion, Sweet Tooth should get his own figure and both him and his ice cream van should be separate from one another. I didn’t expect Sweet Tooth to finally have his own Funko Pop figure, it took me aback. There hasn’t been a single piece of merchandise based on him since The Stubbins plushie.
Sam Porter Bridges in all of his glory, complete with his intricate suit and a yellow-colored box he carries with him.
What baffles me is I don’t understand why Joel has two variants of Funko Pop figures of himself: one variant has blood on it and the upcoming variant isn’t covered in blood. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say Sony and Funko Pop are becoming greedy just to try and squeeze every penny and pound out of us. Some of us aren’t made out of money, y’know.
Despite my nitpicks, I will honestly say that the figures are well-crafted carefully with a lot of painstakingly detail. But at the end of the day, Funko Pop figures are, to be frank (there’s no beating around the bush to say this), useless overpriced pieces of plastic just waiting to be placed anywhere in a room in a home or a flat. Once you’ve purchased them, you’ve wasted your hard-earned cash. There isn’t much to say just by looking at the pictures of the forthcoming PlayStation Funko Pop figures.
I think Sony and Funko Pop should’ve put their resources and money into many well-known characters instead of generic AAA photorealistic human characters we won’t remember in 10+ years’ time and I’m not just talking about their names. I still can’t even recall the protagonists’ names from The Last Of Us and Death Stranding for the life of me. The same can be said about the official PlayStation calendars Carousel Calendars produce every year, but a review of the PlayStation calendar 2020 is for another time.
If there’s one thing that irks me is Shantae, Spyro, Sparx and Crash Bandicoot had Funko Pop figures months or even years before Ratchet and Clank. Not even Mario and PacMan have Funko Pop figures yet and heck, they’re two of the most famous video game characters of all time. It’s very ironic the most popular video game characters of all time don’t even have their own figures yet.
I know it’s a long shot but I hope Funko Pop and Sony will reconsider their decisions to sell their PlayStation Funko Pop figures exclusively on the Gamestop website and instead have a change of heart to sell their Funko Pops at other foreign stores such as GAME, Amazon UK, Ebay UK, HMV, Forbidden Planet and Travelling Man, for instance. I don’t want to sound like a broken record but this isn’t fair to people worldwide (excluding the US).
