I absolutely enjoyed Gods Will Fall and I strongly believe that it will be one of the hidden gems of 2021. Gods Will Fall is a dark fantasy isometric action game set in a time where gods’ torturous rule over humanity has lasted for millennia.
But these are not benevolent gods, nope. To those who don’t submit to the gods’ will; a slow and merciless death awaits. Having suffered the brutality of the gods’ reign for too long, your clan of 8 Celtic survivors will rise up to take on the legions of horrific beasts and minions that dwell in each of the gods’ hellish realms.
The Overworld serves as the hub connecting all of these hellish realms with one another. You can explore and move around the lush terrain of the Overworld, at your own pace, and unearth the hidden secrets spread across this serene landscape. Doorways to the gods’ realms are spread out all over the entire island and you have total freedom on which one to tackle first.
Once your group reaches the doorway, you must select which of the warriors will tackle this challenge. Your warriors range on their size from lanky to thiccc which in turn affect their power and speed and each is equipped with their own exclusive weapon type.
Things get interesting as you also need to watch out for warriors’ stats being affected by their relationships with each other and with the gods, and by story events. For example if two warriors have a strong bond with each other, if one fails in a realm and gets trapped, the other one might get a powerful buff cause he or she wants to save his or her dear friend. But there’s also debuffs where a warrior might be scared to enter the realm of a god.
Gods are well, weird. And fighting them can be kinda weird too. For example, you might be stuck in a boss and lose 5 of your warriors in a row to just completely overpower the boss with the sixth character. This keeps things interesting as you don’t know how you’ll do the first time you try the realm with one of your warriors.
Don’t get me wrong, the realms are always the same, same layout, same beasts and minions every time, nothing procedural going on here. What changes is your warriors, their weapons, skills and buffs or debuffs.
The combat feels nice as attacks connect in surprisingly satisfying ways and the bodies collapse with cool rag dolls effects. Your warriors’ dexterity depends on the body type, lanky dudes are fast and agile while the thiccc ladies are slow to evade but pack an absolute punch. Also picking up spears, mallets and other weapons from defeated enemies and throwing them at them is exciting too.
As for the visuals, it’s a pretty game with a simple yet stylish vibrant artstyle, some really great environments with beautiful lighting too.
Gods Will Fall really surprised me in the best way possible and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for some good time. Thanks for reading.
