The world’s first affordable, high-end professional driving simulator which lets you experience real forces of a F1 car
I just received this email and what I read inside it was kinda cool so I wanted to share it with you guys. So here are some interesting details for you:
WHAT IS THE G6?
The G6 is a head mounted force feedback interface. Simply put… it is a driving simulator which lets you feel the forces of the car.
WHY ON YOUR HEAD?
Let us do a test. Shake your arm, leg and your head. Where did you feel most of the force?
We have found that most of the force is felt on the head. That led us to design the G6… to give you an immersive feel of the virtual vehicle.
This is because the weight of the head makes the neck muscles work harder, and this is also felt by the inner ear which is the main “sensor” of balance and movement of the human body.
WHY NOT ON THE WHOLE BODY?
- Most of the force is felt on the head, not on the body
- Price – Smaller construction and smaller motors reduce the price
- Larger forces (up to 6 g) can be simulated with a head force feedback interface but not with a full body interface
- Forces can be simulated more accurately – fast response, no delay! (read more below)
- The 6G can be integrated in any racing cockpit
Our thoughts about the G6 Driving Simulator
Now in the project page and the in the pitch, the developers of this technology explain with even more details how this new tech works, feels and delivers a true F1 car experience. Now I am not a scientist so I don’t really understand how this tech works. The only thing that I understood is that your head will feel all of the force and I am more scared than intrigued by it.
As they say on the video, the force experienced by the pilots of F1 cars in while driving can reach to a max of 6G, meaning that their whole body weighs 6 times more than normal. Now this tech can simulate this feeling, this 6 x normal gravity to your head and that is scary at least to me. A normal human head weighs around 10 pounds or around 4-5 KG and if you multiply that by 6 you get 24-30 KG. Can my untrained neck sustain that? Well, maybe but I don’t want to try that. I don’t want to use a tech that can kill me or cause permanent paralysis, who would want that, right?!
Maybe they should pitch it as a “training simulator” that actual F1 pilots can use to train for their races. I don’t think it will be for the masses, like the Oculus Rift or the OMNI, but who knows. I understand that they will offer different models that limit the Gs generated, but I still it’s scary nonetheless. I am sure that there are people waiting for something like this and if you are one or know someone that is, take a look at their project page and back it up. But in the end I think the guys who are developing the tech know what they are doing. In case they don’t, they better have a good lawyer.
