Door Kickers: Action Squad Review

Door Kickers: Action Squad is a crazy old school 2D side scroller action game and I am enamored with it. The simple, fast and really satisfying gameplay makes it one of the best indie games I've played this year.

Playing as a SWAT trooper, you choose your gear and loadout, kick the doors down and face the action head-on. There are a lot of doors that need to be kicked, a lot of bad guys to be killed, a lot of hostages to be saved and a lot of bombs to be defused. That's what you will do throughout the entire game.

Now, even though the game might sound a little repetitive, it doesn't really get repetitive due to the different loadouts along with the different weapons and ultimate abilities. There are a few classes in the game, each with unique weapons like assault rifles, shotguns, SMGs or a combination of a riot shield and a pistol. Other than the many different weapons to try, each class has unique ultimates like for example, one allows you to call in a sniper squad which will take out targets at random or another one will grant you some dragon fire shotgun shells for more added death and destruction. It is really fun to explore and try out all of these classes and their abilities.

Door Kickers: Action Squad also supports local and online co-op which is really fun as it opens the door to some more strategies. For example, your friend can kick down a door and throw in a flashbang while you can drop down from the skylight and mow everyone down. Or you can execute a pincer movement and annihilate the terrorists.

The Broforce vibes I got when playing Door Kickers: Action Squad were really strong. As Broforce, this game has a really strong and great feeling shooting mechanic, the enemies explode in pixelated gory detail especially when you kick their dead bodies. The music is also just phenomenal. It is 80's inspired and takes the game to a whole another level. It's the kind of music you can listen on your own time and luckily for us, the entire soundtrack is available on Spotify.

Door Kickers: Action Squad is a beautiful, simple and satisfying game and no matter where you play it, you will have a lot of fun. Thanks for reading!

Door Kickers: Action Squad is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. A PS4 review code was provided for this review.

I am a sucker for good puzzle games and The Sojourn, a first-person puzzler, perfectly fits into that category.
