ZHeroes just recently released on PS4 and along with the main game came The Forgotten Land DLC pack. Now I do not want to say the same things that our PC editor said about the game when it released back in 2016, so please click here to head over to that review. I will, however, talk about my brief experience with the DLC.
The Forgotten Land DLC introduces 8 brand new levels to play and stomp around. It also introduces a new playable character, Thione, a mystical female martial artist also trying to stop Dr. Vendetta and his evil plan. Just like the rest of the game, the level design is beautiful with a bright and vibrant color palette.
Thione is more agile than the other two characters, during the fighting as she performs combo after combo, flitting across the screen and lighting it up with destruction. So much that sometimes is quite hard to keep track of where you are and what's actually happening. It's enjoyable to punch your way through hordes of robots and the new vehicle was just the cherry on top. However, the game got old really really fast.
Now going back to the old times, when we played Streets of Rage or Double Dragon, I am talking about the arcade versions, the beat 'em up style gameplay never got old. Repeating the same, again and again, never felt like a chore. And maybe that was because we didn't have anything better. Sure we had Zelda and Metroid, but those you could play in your home at your own pace and not everyone could afford the NES and SNES. That's why arcades were so popular back then. But in today's world where we have a ton of games to play, games that combine multiple elements from many different genres creating amazing experiences, barebone ones like ZHeroes feel just weird.
Sure, while playing it I got nostalgic about the old days, but even that wasn't enough to keep me playing and finishing the game. Doing the same stuff, punching or blasting the same robots through the same-looking corridors, rooms and paths got old and I well stopped playing the game altogether and moved onto something better. I don't know though, maybe you are into this genre and you'll love ZHeroes on PS4, it's totally up to you. Thanks for reading!
