Caravan SandWitch is a game that blends heartwarming storytelling, captivating world-building, and stress-free exploration into a unique experience

I absolutely adore Caravan SandWitch, from its simple premise and quirky cast of diverse characters to the cozy, carefree gameplay and drop-dead gorgeous visuals. Everything coalesces into one perfect package. However, the most important thing Caravan SandWitch gets right is that it has a lot of heart. You can feel the love and passion the developers have poured into nearly every aspect of the game. That’s what makes it truly special and well worth experiencing for yourself.

In Caravan SandWitch, as Sauge, you embark on a journey across a Sci-Fi, Provence-like world, driven by the mystery of your missing sister, which unfolds with each step. After receiving a message from your sister, you return to your home planet, Cigalo, to uncover what happened to her, while also investigating what went wrong with the planet itself and seeing if there’s anything you can do to fix it.

Throughout the journey, you are “stalked” by a sand witch, a mysterious figure determined to stop you. I won’t spoil the details, as it’s part of the experience. Just know that while the story may be predictable if you pay attention, at its core, it’s a human tale that explores themes of grief, love, and living in harmony with nature.

Cigalo is a beautifully crafted, open world begging to be explored. You can explore on foot, as Sauge is quite agile, easily able to jump, mantle, and climb obstacles, or you can use the van. The van controls effortlessly, allowing you to quickly traverse long distances to complete various tasks given by the inhabitants of Cigalo. As you progress and collect components scattered across the world, you can upgrade the van with new tools that unlock more of the world in a Metroidvania-like fashion. The scanner, for instance, lets you pin components, doors, and other objects of interest. Later, you acquire a grappling hook for the van, which you can use to yank open doors, find hidden caches, and create ziplines to access new areas. Both tools receive further upgrades later in the game, but I won’t spoil the details.

I cannot stress enough how much I love the exploration in Caravan SandWitch. This vibrant and visually stunning world is filled with tiny objects and intricate details that make it feel alive. Sauge’s home village is breathtaking, Rose’s house is stunning, the forest is awe-inspiring, the frog cave is remarkable, the desert is dazzling, and all the massive, abandoned structures are incredible. The whole game is just visually striking, and I’m eagerly anticipating the update that adds Photo Mode—if it isn’t already live by the time this review is published!

The tasks assigned by the remaining community of people, creatures, and robots are relatively simple: finding and fetching objects, destroying jammer antennas, or locating archives that reveal the true purpose of Cigalo’s now-abandoned facilities. There are no timers, no death, no combat, and no fail state. You can take all the time you need to explore the many beautiful points of interest and complete these tasks at your own pace. Completing them not only provides useful information about the task giver but also expands the already fascinating world in unexpected ways. World building, baby — you love to see it!

Caravan SandWitch is a game that blends heartwarming storytelling, captivating world-building, and stress-free exploration into a unique experience. Whether you’re solving the mysteries of Cigalo, upgrading your van, or simply taking in the breathtaking scenery, every moment in this game feels thoughtful and lovingly crafted. With its lack of combat and fail states, it offers a relaxing yet deeply engaging journey that makes you feel truly connected to its world and characters. It’s an essential must-play game for anyone especially those looking for a laid-back, heartfelt adventure. I truly love this game and it's definitely up there on my GOTY list. Thanks for reading!
