Streets Of Rogue is without a doubt a special game. I honestly had never heard of the game until it popped up on my steam for early access. After playing the game for a few hours I am completely hooked and I’m sure you will be also!
Streets Of Rogue Review:
On the surface Streets of Rogue seems like a mixture of GTAIII, Deus Ex, with the graphics of the original Zelda series, but what makes the game truly stand out is the fantastic and hilarious game play. The game has unlimited possibilities and opportunities, which gives you endless ways to attack each mission. Each level is randomly generated so you will never play the same level more then once. I was given an Alpha edition to review so all the missions were randomly generated without any actual story line to follow. Story line or “Big Quests”, as they are called in the game are going to be appearing at a later date, which makes the depth of the game at this early stage in development that much more impressive!
The staggering number of options that you have at your disposal is one of the major aspects of this game. Items that you can pick up and use, the ridiculous ways you can approach a mission and the many different ways you can interact with your environment, give this game a depth and replay value that is often not seen in Indie games. The other critical aspect of the Streets of Rogue is the emergent nature of the game play. This is because of the fantastic AI characters. They all act on their own, which creates many different situations for you. The way they interact with the player, the environment and other AI characters leads to truly hysterical moments. Streets of Rogue has done an incredible job combining both of these elements which leads to an amazing game with endless situations and endless game play. You have so many different ways to approach each situation and every one of them is challenging, and most importantly loads of fun
At its core, the goals of the game are pretty simple: On each floor, you are given 2 to 3 missions. These appear on your map screen, and there are a variety of different objectives that each mission can be comprised of. Each floor is almost like a small town, with a variety of different buildings filled with all sorts of things, and each individual mission will always be given its own building. Once you’ve completed the required missions, you can then access the elevator that takes you to the next floor. Each mission also gives you a variety of possible rewards, and some floors will contain a character that can offer you a totally optional mission as well.
Missions differ in how they work, including ones that have the same objective. For example lets say your current mission involves neutralizing a character. The character could be inside of a well protected building with guards, cameras, and trip mines or he could simply be a shop owner and just be sitting behind his desk. Your first thought would be that the shop owner is an easy kill, but he probably has a high powered shotgun at his disposal, as well as other thugs in the store. You blow up the walls and come in that way, or you could use stealth or maybe even become a vampire and bite him from behind. The opportunities are endless. Your schemes will not always work out. There are loads of people in this bizarre city, each with their own agenda, and they can often screw up your plans in ways that you never expected, bringing you new troubles and causing chaos, adding to the emergent nature of the game play in a very dynamic and fun way. And you have tons of different ways of interacting with all these characters. Hire some goons to do your dirty work, or even bribe the cops on the current floor to ignore your crimes for awhile, among tons of other options.
When all else fails, pure combat is the only answer! Thankfully, the shooting/combat system in Streets of Rogue is fantastic. You move your player with the keyboard while the mouse acts as your aiming sights. This concept gives you versatility while running away or strafing your enemies, while still allowing you to fire back from any angle. There are numerous melee weapons to use. The normal ones are there such as punch, knife, and bat, but you can also come across battle axs, swords, police batons and many more insane weapons. The same can be said about all the guns in the game there is a huge variety of guns and most are way over the top! You also have the ability of using grenades, land mines and other explosives. These explosives add aspect to the missions because they allows you to blow up most walls, giving you straight path to your objective.
You gain XP for completing missions and many other things. Gaining XP allows you to give your character a new trait. These traits give your player different abilities ranging from paying less at the store, to making ugly faces during combat which ends up scaring your enemies. You can also activate mutators that change the game in a huge way. These range from having very low health to other crazy ideas like no ammo.
The character selection is very diverse in the game and allows you many options. You could play as a soldier, who has extra health and many guns or you could play as a doctor who isn’t allowed to use weapons. My favorite character is Dracula, his signature trait allows you the ability of biting other characters to regain health. Each character has a different feel to them and changes your approaching significantly. Fortunately they are all a blast to play with and it truly shows the creativity of the developers.
Streets of Rogue is a fantastic game that I would highly recommend. It is currently available through Steam early access and I very excited to see what other amazing features the devs come up with! Thanks for reading!
