Technology Can Be a Money Saver

As a connected society, we rely on technology on a daily basis. While many of us assume that we are using technology to its fullest potential, some of us may be missing out on the ways technology can help us save money.

If you want to save money (who doesn’t?), consider some of these tech tips:

Grocery Shopping

Food is an essential part of our everyday lives, but it can be a big expense. Whether eating for one or shopping for a family of five, saving money at the grocery store allows you to get more of what you want and to eat well. For years, the only way to save money on groceries was by clipping coupons, but these days, technology makes it much easier:

  • Faster Rebates: From alcoholic beverages to frozen waffles and toiletries, Ibotta, the popular rebate app will get you money back (and directly deposited) within two days. There’s no need to keep track of a rebate form, find an envelope, and pay for postage. Although you have to pay the full price at the store, you will receive a decent rebate (anywhere from 50 cents to a couple of dollars).
  • Check out Your Favorite Store’s App: Have a favorite place to shop? Your store may have their own app and you can get the inside scoop on specials and new items before anyone else does. Search online or ask a sales associate at the store if they have a downloadable app.
  • Keep Your Spending in Check: When grocery shopping, in particular, it’s easy to buy more than you intended and get out of bounds with your budget. BagIQ is an app that keeps tabs on how much you spend when you scan receipts and barcodes. It may be just what you need to stay focused on saving money.

Utilities: Phone & TV

Monthly utilities can add up quickly, leaving you wondering if and what you can cut to save money. Some “essentials” include cable, cell phone, and other expenses that you don’t think that you can live without (you probably can, but who wants to?). If you have an expensive phone plan or even a landline, you may want to check out Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) in the likes of Skype or Google Voice, which allows you to make a phone call as long as you have an internet connection.

Cable is expensive and a DVR player is time consuming (and kind of a thing of the past). Why not ditch both, if you haven’t already, and pay a small monthly fee for streaming sites like Hulu and Netflix? These days, there’s a lot of stuff you can catch on Hulu, as long as you’re willing to watch it a day late. You may also want to check out Crackle or Shout! Factory TV.

Helpful Online Guides & Maps

Maps and guides have always been a tried and true method for receiving helpful information and with the right info, you can save money. If you have, for example, been involved in a car accident, you may have no idea what to do next. Fortunately there are online resources that will guide you through the process, such as whether or not to hire an attorney, and save yourself money in the process. In fact, in some cases, you may find out that you are missing out on compensation for any damages that you thought you’d have to pay out of pocket.
